Championing Education and Opportunity for West Michigan’s Latino Community

Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño, President of Cornerstone University, has emerged as a strong advocate for the Latino community in West Michigan. A Colombian immigrant who arrived in the U.S. at age nine, he embodies the immigrant story of perseverance, education, and service. Under his leadership, Cornerstone has deepened its connection with the Hispanic community through strategic partnerships and inclusive initiatives.

Notably, he helped launch the SOAR program, a mobile-delivered business degree that now serves Hispanic Chamber of Commerce members with scholarships and access to higher education. He’s also supported the Urban Church Leadership Center, offering resources to dozens of Latino churches over six years. Moreno-Riaño regularly invites Hispanic pastors to speak at chapel services and personally translates their messages—bridging cultures within the university.

Nationally, he’s elevated Latino voices by welcoming leaders like Rev. Samuel Rodriguez and CHLI’s Mary Ann Gomez Orta to campus events, and by representing West Michigan in Washington, D.C.Thanks to his leadership, Hispanic enrollment at Cornerstone’s School of Business has doubled. Through vision and lived experience, Dr. Moreno-Riaño is transforming higher education access for Latinos—proving that when we invest in community, everyone rises.


Impulsando la Educación y Oportunidades para la Comunidad Latina en West Michigan

El Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño, presidente de Cornerstone University, se ha convertido en un firme defensor de la comunidad latina en West Michigan. Inmigrante colombiano que llegó a EE. UU. a los nueve años, representa la historia de perseverancia, educación y servicio que caracteriza a muchos latinos.
Bajo su liderazgo, Cornerstone ha fortalecido sus lazos con la comunidad hispana mediante alianzas estratégicas e iniciativas inclusivas. Destaca la creación del programa SOAR, una licenciatura móvil en negocios que ofrece becas a miembros de la Cámara Hispana de Comercio y sus familias.

Durante más de seis años, Cornerstone ha proporcionado oficinas y recursos al Urban Church Leadership Center, beneficiando a decenas de iglesias latinas y sus líderes.
