Greg Rios said his humble upbringing helped him understand the importance of having a family network of support, and he has since taken that lesson to being a bridge builder for West Michigan’s Latino community.

Originally from Holland, Rios has called West Michigan home for his entire life, and he has seen a tremendous growth in the regional Latino population, he said. In numerous positions he has advocated to advance the prosperity of West Michigan Latinos.

“I worked hard to be where I am at with my career, and I want others to know that they too can achieve great things if they commit to hard work, dedication and have a foundation of sound core values.”

As president of the Board of Directors for Roosevelt Park Ministries, which is home to Grand Rapids’ largest Hispanic population, he has guided the organization in its goals to provide support to improve community health, education and employment.

His proudest achievement, he said, was coordinating with Latin Americans United for Progress for his current employer, Huntington Bank, to host a monthly series titled Cuentas Claras, giving Latino members a financial literacy class that ended with a traditional game of Loteria.

“Normally, when these events are held, we do a fun and interactive game of traditional Bingo, but understanding the audience I suggested we do Loteria to be focused on the ethnicity of our audience,” he said. “The class was a success, and we continued with the series over the next year, introducing topics like how to start business, banking basics, homeownership, and more.”

Rios has also been involved in providing financial education via Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP), planning for the Latinx Youth Conference and served with the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce Minority Business Certification Committee, which selected and reviewed applications to minority businesses, many of which are Latino owned.
