Since arriving in Grand Rapids in 1976, Zoraida Sanchez has been a fearless advocate for the Hispanic community. With a background in social services in Puerto Rico, she began her U.S. journey at the Hispanic Institute, quickly rising to become Director of Latin American Services in 1980.
Over the next 22 years, she led programs that transformed lives—most notably the Hispanic Senior Citizens Program—while holding seats on over 12 local boards and three governor-appointed state commissions.

Zoraida fought tirelessly against injustice and discrimination, advocating with school superintendents, police chiefs, and elected officials. Her leadership helped establish bilingual education programs, hospital translation units, and diversity training within law enforcement.

After retiring due to illness in 2002, she founded a successful income tax and translation business, creating jobs for nine Hispanic workers and preparing taxes for over 2,000 clients. Her tax preparation courses have empowered many to launch their own businesses.

Today, Zoraida continues mentoring youth, advising politicians, and inspiring students—often becoming a guest of honor at their graduations. Her book Mujeres in Business, co-authored with Isabel Flores, offers guidance to future Latina entrepreneurs.
