The Power of Gathering: The Story Behind the Inaugural West Michigan Latina Conference

Those were the first words I spoke as I stood before more than 230 incredible Latina professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders at the inaugural West Michigan Latina Conference on March 12, 2025. Looking out into that crowd—a room filled with ambition, passion, and resilience—I felt something I had been searching for: belonging.
This conference was not born out of convenience; it was born out of necessity.

The Question That Started It All
A little over a year ago, I found myself asking a simple but powerful question: Where is the space for Latinas like me?
As I navigated my own career, I realized that while there were leadership events and networking opportunities in West Michigan, none were specifically designed for Latina professionals career growth. There wasn’t a place where we could openly discuss the unique challenges we face in the workplace, in business, and in society while also celebrating our culture and contributions.
I shared this thought with my dad, Edgar Garcia (and editor-in-chief of VIVE Michigan Magazine), who not only listened but, as he has always done, encouraged me to dream bigger. With his support and the platform of VIVE Michigan Magazine, what started as an idea became a reality—one that would bring together hundreds of Latinas from across West Michigan to learn, grow, and uplift one another.

More Than an Event— A Moment of Recognition
The West Michigan Latina Conference was intentionally scheduled in March, aligning with International Women’s Day, reinforcing our role in the broader conversation about gender equity and leadership… with a Latina flair. But this event was more than just a place to connect—it was about learning, about empowerment, and about claiming our space.
As our incredible keynote speaker, Natalia Kovicak, kicked off the event, she reminded us:
“Latinas are a powerful force in Michigan’s economy, and yet, we are still underrepresented in leadership roles, decision-making spaces, and media. The time is now to change that.”
The day began with a powerful overview of the economic impact of Latinas in West Michigan, setting the foundation for what was to come: a series of dynamic, action-driven workshops designed to equip attendees with the tools they need to thrive.

Workshops That Mattered
Each workshop was created with purpose, addressing the real and pressing challenges Latinas face in their careers and businesses:

Plans are already underway for next year’s conference, with even more opportunities for mentorship, leadership development, and business growth. Our goal is to ensure that Latinas in Michigan continue to rise, take up space, and lead in every industry.
