Carlos A. Hidalgo – West Michigan 25 Most Influential Latinos – Gala 2026
Carlos A. Hidalgo
CEO
Hidalgo & DeVries, Inc.
Carlos A. Hidalgo was born in Havana, Cuba, the grandson of French and Spanish immigrants. At 15, after Fidel Castro’s takeover, his parents made the heartbreaking decision to send him to the United States alone. He finished high school in the Midwest as the only foreign-born student and the only minority, encountering racism for the first time and choosing to speak up rather than stay silent. That decision defined the leader he would become.
He built an extraordinary career before arriving in West Michigan, starting as a mail clerk at Life Magazine and rising to assistant to the Publisher, then moving through executive roles at ADP, Sharp Electronics, and the prestigious Madison Avenue firm Rosenfeld, Sirowitz and Lawson, serving clients like Ford, McDonald’s, and Delta. After fulfilling a lifelong dream of attending Bible school in the Adirondacks, he became COO of Word of Life, the largest summer camping and educational ministry in the world, operating in 82 countries. He arrived in Grand Rapids in 1988 as CEO of a major local company.
As Board Chair of the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce in 1997, he launched the Institute for Healing Racism, now the Inclusion Institute and the Family Owned Business Council, now housed at GVSU’s Seidman College of Business. He was appointed by Governor John Engler to the Michigan Commission on Spanish-Speaking Affairs and was named the Chamber’s first-ever Chamber Champion. For Carlos, DEI is not merely good business practice, it is a moral mandate.
“His greatest achievement was not reaching the top | it was going back for those who were still climbing.”
