Jesús Grillo
Co-Publisher | New/Nueva Opinión
Business Development Lead | El Concilio Kalamazoo

Jesús Grillo was born and raised in Colombia and arrived in the United States with the hope shared by many immigrants, to build a better future and contribute to his community. He experienced firsthand the challenges Latino families face: learning a new culture, overcoming language barriers, and navigating systems that can feel overwhelming. Those experiences shaped his life’s mission.

In 1999, he co-founded New/Nueva Opinión, Southwest Michigan’s only Spanish-language newspaper, ensuring that Spanish-speaking residents have access to culturally relevant information that helps them make informed decisions and engage fully in their communities. For over two decades, the publication has served as a vital voice for Latino families throughout the region.

As a Road to Success Coach for El Concilio’s Camino al Éxito program, Jesús provides one-on-one coaching, business planning guidance, financial literacy training, and access to capital, having helped facilitate the creation of more than 100 Latino-owned businesses in the greater Kalamazoo area, generating jobs and building pathways to financial independence.

As Co-Leader of the Battle Creek Latin American Heritage Initiative, he has organized scholarship programs and computer distributions for families, bridging the digital divide and expanding educational opportunities for Latino youth.

Recognized with the Red Rose Award from the Rotary Club and honored by McDonald’s as one of Michigan’s Top 10 Latino Leaders, Jesús believes true leadership is not about the spotlight, it is about opening doors for those who come behind.

“He gave Latino voices a newspaper | because silence was never an option.”
